Dear Just Food Supporter,
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Just Food, I am writing to provide you with an update on the progress we are making to work through the recent issues our organization has experienced.
Your support plays a critical role in our mission and operations, and we intend to be as transparent as possible with you regarding our situation.
As reported in the media, the board of Just Food recently learned about unpaid federal payroll taxes and an unfinalized tax document that was submitted to the United Way by our former executive director, Jeremy Farmer. At the same time we learned of these serious financial issues, the Board also discovered that Mr. Farmer unilaterally discontinued our organization’s outside accounting services some time ago without board consideration or knowledge, and misrepresented an ongoing relationship.
Upon learning of these serious issues, our board immediately engaged the highly regarded accountants at McFadden group to conduct a full financial review. Through this discovery process, our board was shocked and dissapointed to learn that Mr. Farmer regularly ignored and circumvented internal control procedures that were put in place to avoid the financial issues we are currently facing.
The Just Food board will continue working with the McFadden Group on all accounting, tax, and payroll processes. Their team is working closely with the IRS and Kansas Department of Revenue in making timely payments going forward and helping Just Food address its tax issues. We are also engaging a firm to conduct our 2014 audit.
We are optimistic that these issues will be successfully overcome and our mission continued. Our board and staff have received an outpouring of support from across the community, and we are confident in our ability to correct and learn from this situation.
Nothing is more important than your support. We are humbled and inspired by your generosity and are committed to ensuring that your gifts and donations will be utilized in a manner that helps those who need it most. Whether it be through volunteering, donating to food drives, sharing words of encouragement, or making a contribution, your goodwill is our greatest asset.
As always, please contact a board member or call our offices if you are interested in making any kind of contribution at this very important time. We hope you will join us on Thursday, August 27th for Chef’s Table Lawrence, a collaborative dinner by local chefs to benefit Just Food.
Since opening our doors six years ago, we have seen the number of families needing our assistance rise to an all-time high. We pledge to you our commitment to ensure Just Food emerges stronger and more vital than ever before.
