JUST FOOD AND FLINT HILLS BREADBASKET COMPETE TO "BLOCK HUNGER" LEADING UP TO SUNFLOWER SHOWDOWN—WINNER TAKES HOME $10,000

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OCTOBER 14th, 2024

Just Food (Lawrence, KS) and Flint Hills Breadbasket (Manhattan, KS) are facing off in a competition to “Block Hunger” leading up to the Sunflower Showdown. From October 18th to October 27th, the two food pantries will compete pound-for-pound to see who can collect the most food donations. The organization that collects the most will win a grand prize of $10,000.

The $10,000 prize is generously donated by our sponsors. Flint Hills Breadbasket's sponsor, The Trust Company, and Just Food's sponsor, an anonymous donor, have each contributed $2,500. Dillons, the premier sponsor, has matched that with $5,000, bringing the winning prize to $10,000.

Dillons will also be hosting food drives at their designated Lawrence and Manhattan locations. In Lawrence, food collected at the 23rd Street location and the 6th and Wakarusa location between October 18th and 27th will count toward Just Food's total amount of food raised. These food drives will feature special appearances from:

  • Starting KU football players at Dillons on 6th and Wakarusa from 4–8 PM on October 24th.

  • Big Jay at Dillons on 23rd from 11 AM–3 PM on October 25th.

Monetary donations are also welcome, with each dollar counting as one pound. Support your favorite team by donating to your local food pantry and help both food banks in their mission to fight food insecurity in their communities.

Information on where to bring food donations can be found on each food bank’s website and social media channels.
